Teachers Qualify Through Tollbar Trust's Graduate Training Scheme

Four newly-qualified teachers have completed their training through the Graduate Teacher Training Programme run by Tollbar Multi Academy Trust. They are now all teaching in one of the Trust's secondary schools. Two further trainees are expected to qualify next month.

The Graduate Teacher Training programme has proved a highly successful training scheme for a number of staff at Tollbar Multi Academy Trust. The course is open to university graduates who have experience in the school setting and provides an opportunity for them to earn a salary while gaining invaluable experience as a full-time member of staff in one of the Trust's Academies.

Trainees have the opportunity to gain qualified Teacher Status (QTS) through a structured programme that provides extensive experience in the classroom. The Assessment Only scheme provides opportunities for graduates to become qualified in both the Primary and Secondary sectors.

Danielle Sibbick and Emma Holt are now teaching English at Somercotes Academy; Josh Davie is teaching History at Cleethorpes Academy; David Sidebottom is teaching Maths at Tollbar Academy; and Jessica Houlton and Rebecca Maguire will qualify at Cleethorpes Academy in April 2018.

Cleethorpes Academy History Teacher Josh Davie graduated in 2013 and joined the Graduate Teacher Training Programme at Tollbar in February 2015, after working for English Heritage.

He said: "I found the course very hard but ultimately rewarding. It gave me the opportunity to become an integrated member of the school and the department and gave me experience at the front of the classroom, which has been vital in my progression."

Cleethorpes Academy Trainee P.E. Teacher Jessica Houlton, who is due to complete her teacher training in April, had competed in athletics to national standard when she decided she wanted to promote her expertise to another generation. The Loughborough University graduate joined the Graduate Teacher Training Programme at Tollbar Multi Academy Trust.

She said: "I was overwhelmed as this was the opportunity I had been waiting for. The training provided by the Trust has been absolutely beneficial to my progression and development as a P.E. teacher. I have learnt so much through the guided support of my mentors and the staff around me. I would really recommend this route into teaching as I feel that with the on the job training you learn much quicker and you develop as a teacher every single day."

Paul Donnelly, Tollbar MAT Vice Principal, said: "Tollbar MAT is committed to providing a bespoke training programme to equip candidates with the necessary skills to pass the 12 week Assessment Only programme. Key to the Trusts ethos is the development of staff and the programme has enabled a number of staff to gain Qualified Teacher Status. Tollbar MAT is committed to enable all graduates to stay with the Trust and, as a result, all staff who have come through this training route currently hold teaching positions with the Trust."
