End Of Summer Term Letter July 2018

20 July 2018

Dear Parent/Carer

As we approach the end of the academic year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support. It was lovely to see so many parents/carers at our end of term celebration assemblies where we recognised the many successes of Cleethorpes Academy students.

Sports Day

Students in Years 7-10 enjoyed good weather for the 8th annual Sports Day at King George Athletics Stadium, they were a credit to the Academy. The enthusiasm and support for each other that was demonstrated, provided an exciting day full of atmosphere.

Year 11 - Results Day

I was pleased to see Year 11 students enjoying their leavers' day in a multitude of fancy dress outfits and their leavers' Prom at the Brackenborough Hotel. They thoroughly deserved their celebrations after working so hard for their GCSE examinations. Can I remind parents that students can collect their GCSE results from 9:00am on Thursday 23 August 2018.

My Ed App

A large number of parents/carers have already downloaded the app which enables them to view their child's attendance, timetable and receive messages from the Academy. If any parent/carer has not downloaded the app, links on how to do this are on the Academy website.

Lunchtime Arrangements

The new cashless catering system has proved very successful. Thank you for your support with this new initiative. If you have any issues or queries please contact the Catering Manager of Aspens at the Academy.

Attendance

The Government changed its definition of 'persistent absence' and reduced the threshold at which a pupil is named as a 'persistent absentee'. If a student is absent for 10% of the academic year, i.e. 19 days, they will be categorised as 'persistent absent', regardless of whether the absence is authorised.

Can I also remind you that the Government have withdrawn the right of Headteachers to authorise leave of absence for the purpose of a family holiday. Leave of absence can only be authorised in exceptional circumstances and a family holiday does not fall into this category.

Uniform

I would like to thank parent/carers for their support in ensuring their children are correctly attired in full uniform. This enhances the reputation of the Academy and ensures our students are well prepared for the next stage of their education.

I would like to remind parents/carers of specific aspects of our uniform. There are numerous brands that advertise clothing as school wear, but it does not match our uniform policy. This is especially true of girls' slim leg trousers, some of which resemble leggings and therefore are unacceptable for school. Please bear in mind the following when purchasing uniform over the summer break. Once again the policy will be strictly enforced from September. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us prior to purchase.

  • Trousers - black smart tailored trousers NOT tightly fitting to the leg or cropped to the ankle.
  • Shoes - canvas type shoes, trainers/trainer type shoes, boots and plimsolls are not acceptable.
  • Jewellery - a wristwatch and one stud per ear, if ears have been pierced, are the only items of jewellery allowed. If a spacer is in place in a student's ear, it must be no bigger than 8mm. (Nose/eyebrow/tongue or any other form of body piercing is not allowed)
  • Make-up - no make-up or nail varnish is to be worn by students in Years 7 to 10 (discreet make-up is allowed for Year 11 students only)
  • Hairstyles - the following are not allowed: no vivid or two-tone hair colours, no cuts shorter than a number 1 razor setting, no patterns cut into hair, no beaded braids or braids with cotton/material weaves, no extensions which do not match natural hair colour. For girls, a normal plain hair-slide, clip or 'bobble' is acceptable, other hair ornaments are not.

Bicycles

Many students commute to the Academy by bicycle. We encourage the use of helmets and road safety awareness. Although our compound is kept locked, students leave their bicycles at their own risk and it is essential that they are protected with a robust cycle lock.

Term Dates

Enclosed are copies of the term dates for 2018/19 and 2019/20. Please note that the Autumn term starts on Tuesday 4 September 2018. These dates are also available on our website.

I would like to wish you all a restful and enjoyable summer break.

Yours faithfully

Mrs J C Hornby
