Dance circus workshop with Joli Vyann

Performance company, Joli Vyann have been working with students as part of the ‘Our Future Starts Here’ project over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Michael Kelland from Joli Vyann tutored the students in a choregraphed dance.

Michael said: “The students have done really well. It’s something that is very unfamiliar to them and a completely new thing for them to grasp but they’ve done a great job.

I work as a full-time performer but do things like this from time to time. I really enjoy doing outreach projects like this. It gives them the opportunity to learn new things and I’m impressed by how well they’ve picked everything up.”

Joli Vyann present a fusion of circus, dance and theatre with acrobatics, fluid choreography and inventive characters. They teach accessible workshops for all ages and abilities and run community projects for students, like this one at Cleethorpes Academy.

Key Stage 3 students have been practising for two days to perfect their dance.

They worked in pairs or groups of four to create different elements of dance, performance and gymnastics, which were performed to ‘Good as Hell’ by Lizzo.

The students will all attend to watch Joli Vyann, who are performing their show ‘Timeless’, on Saturday 27th May in St James Square. Grimsby.

Year 8 student, Evie Hammond said: “It’s been very different so it was difficult to get into at first, but once we got the hang of everything, we were able to have a laugh.

This type of thing isn’t something that I would necessarily choose to do but I’m really glad that I’ve done it. I am happy that I’ve given it a go because I tend to do all sorts of things, but this is really different for me.”

Harriet MacDonnell (Y7) said: “We’ve been learning the routines and practising for two full days. I’ve enjoyed the atmosphere and it’s been really fun.”

‘Our Future Starts Here’ is an innovative programme of arts and culture in the heart of Grimsby, taking place over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The programme is supported by local businesses and organisations such as The Culture House, Ørsted and myenergi.

Assistant Curriculum Leader for PE, Lydia Moore said: “They have all worked really hard over the past couple of days. It’s pretty intense work and a lot of information and choreography to take in.

They’ve only had a proper break over dinnertime, but they’ve taken everything that’s been thrown at them really well. I am really proud of their hard work.”
